Rules for Travel Insurance by IRCTC: Things to Know

An insurance is a financial protection provided by the insurance company to the insurer for any loss of life or for medical treatment purpose. Insurance covers the insurer by reimbursement of the hospitalization expenses or by paying a lumpsum amount on the demise of the insurer. To be insured for your life is a boon, as it’s a great help when the person is hospitalized for any treatment. In case of a demise of the insurer, though the money can’t bring back the deceased to life or compensate the life of a person, but to some extent can help the family to recover with the financial setback.

IRCTC, to promote digitization, has introduced travel insurance facility for the passengers booking their tickets online. Before navigating to the payment page, the option to choose insurance appears. Once you select the option to buy Insurance, a minimal amount of 0.92 paise per passenger is included in the ticket amount. By this, you can secure your financial loss by opting a travel insurance policy.

Things to Know about Travel Insurance provided by IRCTC

In case of any accident like collision of the train, derailment from tracks or any other type of accidents, the travelers are entitled to insurance amount of Rs.10 Lakhs where death, permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and hospitalization charges will be covered.

In case of permanent disability, the insurer gets a coverage of Rs.7.5 lakh. In addition to it, the traveler gets Rs.2 lakhs for hospitalization expenses, if injured. Indian Railways insures every passenger traveling via reservation seats. Passengers traveling in general class compartment gets only the hospitalization expenses.

In case of inevitable accidents like fire or situations like loot, robbery, attack by dacoit or naxalites etc. the Railways insures its passengers to a certain amount. Here are some travel insurance rules framed by IRCTC for the benefit of passengers.

In case of transporting any mortal remains, the railways provide INR 10,000.

Children who are below the age of 5 are not covered in the travel insurance by IRCTC.

How to Claim Travel Insurance Via IRCTC
Currently, Indian Railways has tied up with three major insurance companies to compensate the loss of life or ensure the hospital expenses of travelers:

  • Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company
  • Shriram General Insurance Company
  • ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company

Once the ticket is booked, the passenger receives an e-mail containing insurance documents.
Note: When you buy an insurance while booking your tickets from IRCTC, make sure to know that you are buying an insurance with these aforementioned companies.

Travelers are vigilant and attentive with activities like checking PNR status, train running status and ticketing information, but ignore the most important factor of traveler insurance.
