More Than 87% Train Tickets Now Booked Online

Indian Railways is quietly carrying out one of its biggest clean-ups of the IRCTC booking system in recent years. Officials say the move became unavoidable as online Train Tickets bookings now crowd out most counter reservations across the country. Phones and apps have taken over, and with that shift has come a wave of misuse, overloaded servers and long-standing loopholes that needed plugging.

Most of the work is happening in the background, but officers familiar with the exercise said the goal is simple: keep the system stable when the rush peaks.

Suspicious IDs Under the Scanner- Train Tickets

Over the last few months, teams inside the railways have been combing through IRCTC user accounts that show unusual activity. Some IDs were found booking in patterns that hinted at automated scripts or coordinated bulk buying. Those profiles are being blocked or removed. A few cases, especially where PNRs were suspected to be created through unfair means, have been pushed to the National Cyber Crime Portal.

One senior official summed it up bluntly: “If the system is crowded already, we can’t let a handful of people twist it. Regular passengers must get a fair shot.”

What’s Changing Behind the Scenes

The technical overhaul is the larger part of the story. Engineers have added new checks that stop bot-generated hits during Tatkal hours, something passengers have complained about for years. These automated bursts often slow the site just when thousands of users try to log in at once.

IRCTC’s Content Delivery Network has also been strengthened so that pages load faster, especially for users logging in from smaller towns and patchy networks. The platform now works on a lighter, API-based model, cutting down unnecessary data exchanges. The idea is to prevent the website from choking at the busiest minutes of the day.

Apart from that, the Railways Ministry has asked for regular third-party audits. These audits review security gaps, server load behaviour and overall reliability. Officials said several suggestions from earlier audit rounds are already being rolled out. Train Ticket availabilitygives you the option to know the available seat and book your ticket earlier.

Online Bookings Now the Norm

A written reply in the Lok Sabha earlier this month put a number to the shift everyone has been noticing: more than 87% of reserved tickets are now booked online. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said this rise has been steady as digital payments and mobile use spread across regions.

Still, the move online hasn’t ended passenger complaints. People continue reporting failed payments, booking freezes and refund delays. The minister said such cases are being tracked closely and pushed for quicker resolution.

Building Capacity Before the Next Rush

Railway officials said the current round of upgrades is part of a much longer effort to make the digital system resilient. In earlier years, fixes were made only after things slowed down or crashed. This time, the approach is more preventive. Teams are tracking weak spots before they trigger larger outages.

Vaishnaw told Parliament that upgrades depend on funding and feasibility, but improving digital capacity remains a priority. Several backend tweaks like real-time monitoring and congestion alerts have already gone live.

What Travellers Will Notice

Most of the improvements won’t be obvious immediately, but passengers may soon see quicker responses on the app and fewer delays during payment. The ministry is also looking at more user-side changes, including simpler screens and clearer error messages.

For now, the priority is stabilising the core booking system. Whether it’s a regular weekday or a festival rush, officials want the site to hold steady without sudden slowdowns or errors. As online bookings rise further, IRCTC is preparing its servers for higher loads than ever before.

The present overhaul, officials said, is one of the most extensive attempts to ready the digital rail-ticketing system for the years ahead.
