Indian Railways is gradually upgrading its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) to improve the ticket booking experience. Currently, the website handles about 32,000 tickets per minute, and the upgraded system will handle around 1.5 lakh tickets per minute.

The final upgrade will match the new user-friendly look and fix the slowdown or crash during Tatkal booking rush. This cloud based PRS can enhance the booking capacity with increased features like train seat selection.

What is PRS in Indian Railways?

Passenger Reservation System or PRS is behind the rail ticket booking. It manages passenger enquiries, RAC, waitlists, seat allocation, and reservation charts. Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) has built and maintained the PRS since 1986.

It helps to book train tickets and get berth allocation based on seat availability. Upcoming upgrades will offer better booking capacity and improved user-experience. Moreover, PRS will also smoothen the process to find the PNR status after booking.

Reservation Train Ticket System Upgrading with Time

Recent years have shaped the rail ticket booking system, offering passengers to plan journeys and make reservations accordingly.

  • Internet-based train ticket booking was introduced in 2002, making train reservation booking beyond the physical counter.
  • In 2014, the Next Generation E-ticket system made high development in train ticket booking, improved performance and reservations.
  • Now, from August 2026, phased migration can be noticed in PRS, improving ticket capacity by around 1.5 lakh tickets per minute.

Reasons for Upgrade in Train Reservation Booking System

Frequently, slowdowns and crashes during tatkal ticket booking affect user experience. However, many other reasons have also accompanied the necessity of rail ticket booking upgrades.

  • Higher demand but limited seat availability increased load during peak booking hours.
  • Frequent system crash problems will also be fixed with this increased capacity of 1.5 lakh tickets per minute during Tatkal booking time.
  • It will also tackle the problem of slow transactions during peak demand with higher capacity with instant and fast processes.
  • Integrating AI for smart prediction, fraud mitigation, and optimised auto-upgradation will improve the user experience.

Final Upgradation in PRS

Indian Railways is upgrading the new PRS in multiple phases. So, certain changes can be seen over time. However, there is no plan to upgrade the train reservation booking system overnight.

The Upgradation process has started from August 2026 and will be completed in multiple phases. Moreover, the new platform will be tested at different levels before completion to improve user experience.
