Vande Bharat Express Guide: Every Train Running in India in 2026
India has 164 Vande Bharat services running as of early 2026. That number keeps increasing with Railways announcing more and more of such trains. However, most people are not interested about the numbers because what most people actually want to know is simpler: which train goes from where to where, what time does it leave, and how long will it take. This guide answers that.
The trains are split into three types now. The original Chair Car services with reserved, air-conditioned seating still form the bulk of the network. Then there’s the Sleeper variant, which only launched commercially in January 2026 and currently runs one route. And the Namo Bharat (Vande Metro), which is unreserved, cheaper, and built for short-hop commuters. More on each below.
For live running status, seat availability, or PNR tracking on any of these trains, RailMitra has all the tools you need.
What is Vande Bharat Express?
A single engine does not lead this kind of train. Instead, each car moves on its own power – no need for one unit dragging the rest. Thanks to distributed drive systems, pickup happens more quickly compared to traditional models. Thirty seconds is all it takes to hit 100 km/h. Though the top goal sits at 180, real-world runs usually fall between 110 and 160 as bumpy tracks pull numbers down. Speed cuts travel short, no matter if peak gets reached. Route choice changes what happens mile by mile.
Before sunrise in February 2019, steel tracks guided the first journey linking New Delhi to Varanasi by rail. Testing revealed issues – not just brake malfunctions but also broken windows from flying stones, besides complaints about unappetizing food served onboard. Despite polished government statements, what rolled out resembled little more than an experimental run. Today’s passenger rides, though, belong to a newer edition: launched toward year-end 2022. Smoother curves cut wind now, breakdowns occur less often, safety gained strength through embedded Kavach technology.
Here’s something you should keep in mind before looking at the schedule: a lot of these trains run over capacity, sometimes well past 100%. On the Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru line, for example, occupancy has even hit 187%. Seriously, no typo there. Seats go fast on the busy routes. Book early, or at least check if there are any spots left before you set your plans.
Vande Bharat Sleeper (Launched January 2026)
Only one route is operational right now.

January 17, 2026 saw the initial test run – five days earlier than planned. Even so, regular service kicked off by the 22nd, after trial trips began halfway through the week. Traveling this stretch between Howrah and Guwahati now moves faster than before, outpacing older options like the Saraighat Express. What once needed nearly 17 hours finishes neatly in just 14. From Howrah onward, the ride to Guwahati builds cost gradually – about ₹2.40 per km in AC 3-tier, landing close to ₹2,300 when you reach. Sleeping berths shaped for body comfort come included, so do vacuum-based toilets instead of regular ones, meals arrive on trays mid-journey at no added price.
Sleeper fare breakdown:
| Class | Rate/km |
| AC 3-Tier | ₹2.40 |
| AC 2-Tier | ₹3.10 |
| First Class AC | ₹3.80 |
Earlier than planned, operations started five days ahead – on the 17th. Back then, trains like the Saraighat Express took close to seventeen hours moving from Howrah to Guwahati. Now, the journey finishes about three hours sooner. Beyond speed, travelers find improved comforts: orthopedic sleeping spaces, bio-vacuum sanitation systems, and included meals. Pricing for AC 3-tier works out to approximately ₹2.40 per kilometer. That brings the total fare for the entire stretch close to ₹2,300.

No advance reservation. These air-cooled carriages outpace the outdated MEMU lines they’ve taken over, operating similarly to city-based commuter routes. Six days every week see these trains in motion, designed primarily for locals rather than tourists, offering around 1,150 fixed seats. Standing room pushes total capacity beyond two thousand riders per run. A minimal fare begins at ₹30 for short hops, rising to ₹430 for a one-way trip between Bhuj and Ahmedabad. Frequent users benefit from recurring ride plans – available in weekly, twice-monthly, or month-long formats. Speed gains come paired with steady scheduling, resembling urban transit patterns more than long-haul services. Though similar in boarding practice to local trains, speed and comfort mark the difference. This isn’t built for sightseers – it serves those moving between cities routinely.
Chair Car Services: Northern and North Western Region
Northern Railway runs the densest cluster of Vande Bharat routes in the country. Most radiate from New Delhi. There’s a logic to that as it’s the national capital, it connects to religious destinations (Varanasi, Katra for Vaishno Devi, Ayodhya), hill stations (Dehradun, Amb Andaura), and border cities. High passenger volume routes, most of them.

Now, Delhi–Varanasi has two pairs of daily trains (22435/36 and 22415/16). That’s not something you see often on a single intercity route in India. Varanasi sees serious footfall of religious tourism, BHU students, pilgrims and it shows in the booking data.
The Srinagar–Katra train (26402/26404) is worth singling out. The coaches have specialized heating for sub-zero temperatures, which isn’t standard on most Vande Bharat rakes. This stretch isn’t easy either, the terrain is tough, and you just don’t have the same straightforward technical setup as you’d find on the flat Delhi–Lucknow corridor.
Saharanpur–Gomtinagar (26504/26503) and Meerut City–Varanasi (22490/22489) aren’t on the table because there was no verified timing data available for them. Instead of guessing, it’s better to just leave them out. Use the live train running status tool for those.
Chair Car Services: Western and Central Region
Mumbai–Ahmedabad in 5 hours 30 minutes. That’s what most people in this zone actually came here to check. Before this train, a daytime trip between those two cities meant a slower intercity option or the morning Shatabdi. The current timings make a same-day return possible, you leave early, you’re back in the evening. That’s changed how a lot of business travel works on this corridor. Not every route in the zone is as clean a story as this one, but that’s the headline.

Pune–Nagpur (26101/26102) is the odd one in this list. At 881 km and 13 hours 35 minutes, it’s the longest Chair Car Vande Bharat in India: a category that’s theoretically for routes under 800 km. The exception got made because demand on the Pune–Nagpur corridor is real and the road journey is punishing. Overnight travel on a Chair Car is not comfortable by any metric. But passengers are apparently willing.
Weekend travelers find booking early essential, since demand for the Mumbai–Goa trains (22229/22230) runs high. Though scenic views line the Konkan track, it’s the practical timing that draws most passengers. Instead of coastal detours, many head straight to Madgaon – this station acts as Goa’s primary railway link.
Timings for Ahmedabad–Okha (22925/22926) and Udaipur–Asarva (26963/26964) were missing from the version I reviewed – because of that, they’re not included either. If you need the latest for those, RailMitra’s train schedule should have it.
Passengers can order food in train with the help of RailMitra platform. The food served is fresh, hygienic and is delivered right on to your train seat.

These timings can actually vary on the day of booking. Don’t rely on these static figures, use train live status to track train timings in real time with RailMitra. Traveling between the capital of Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, many government workers and business people rely on the Bhopal–Nizamuddin route. Covering 702 kilometers takes just 7 hours and 36 minutes, making it surprisingly efficient for its length across the rail system.
Starting at Lucknow, the rail line stretches toward Dehradun linking capital cities lacking strong highway links. Though overlooked by major news outlets, passenger numbers remain steady throughout the year.

Ranchi now connects to Howrah, Patna, and Varanasi by Vande Bharat. For a state capital that had genuinely poor fast rail links for years, three connections is a meaningful change. A new train route between Ranchi and Puri may soon launch, pending last-stage clearances by early 2026. Though still under review, officials suggest green lights could come within months. Progress appears steady despite typical bureaucratic delays. Final checks now determine whether operations begin on schedule.
Back in August 2025, more carriages were added to the Puri–Rourkela service as crowds kept spilling past capacity. Pilgrims fill one end of the route; at the other, steel mill hands head home after shifts, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. Though their reasons differ widely, they share this line. Seats are scarce when both groups travel.
Starting at Howrah, the rail line runs 565 kilometers through factory towns before reaching farmland. Beyond those fields, hills appear with rows of tea bushes near Siliguri. Industrial areas give way to green crops, then slowly shift into plantation terrain. This route connects city output with rural harvests across varied landscapes. Trains pass steel mills first, later rolling beside paddy fields under changing skies. It’s a long corridor with varied economic activity all the way along.

Halfway into the review, gaps emerged – timing data was absent from documented timelines across these corridors. Though linking major industrial hubs, the stretch from Bilaspur to Nagpur cuts through landscapes defined by constant cargo flow; in this setup, one center operates as a critical rail junction in Chhattisgarh, energized by coal transport, whereas the second stabilizes road-based mobility in central India. Running parallel to the shoreline, the path tying Bhubaneswar with Visakhapatnam traverses terrain building economic weight, pulling travelers driven by employment just as much as those moving for individual reasons.
Chair Car Services: Southern Region
Despite their recent launch, four Vande Bharat routes from southern India now rank among the nation’s busiest trains. Busy urban networks across Tamil Nadu play a role, yet so do tech hubs near Bengaluru drawing daily commuters. Religious travel patterns in Andhra Pradesh add further demand, while Kerala’s seaside towns reveal another layer entirely. Along the stretch between Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru, seats reached 187 percent capacity during parts of 2025-26. This surge reflects more than just timing – it signals unmet need. For years, travelers on that coast lacked reliable, swift connections through daylight hours. Once introduced, ridership climbed without pause.
