Indian Railways Punctuality Crosses 80%, Many Divisions Over 90%
According to Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw most of the trains are running on time these days. He told the Rajya Sabha that almost 80% of trains arrive and depart their destinations as scheduled. “Some European networks still face delays even with advanced systems,” he said.
During Question Hour, Vaishnaw added that 70 railway divisions have already crossed 90% punctuality. Quite a change from previous years, when delays were frequent. Many point to stronger maintenance, closer monitoring, and smoother coordination between stations, control rooms, and train crews.
Indian Railways Maintenance and Daily Operations Have Improved
Vaishnaw explained that one of the main reasons for the improvement is stronger maintenance. Tracks are checked regularly. Coaches are inspected more thoroughly. Repairs happen faster. Previously, sudden faults or technical problems caused long delays. Now, staff respond quickly to fix issues. To make a huge difference you need to improve from scratch and add them together.
Crews are deployed more efficiently. Control room staff coordinate with station managers to handle unexpected events. Passengers may not notice all the technical work happening behind the scenes, but the trains are arriving closer to schedule. Minor delays are reduced. Some divisions are performing very well. Others are gradually catching up.
Ballia Station Sees Growth in Train Services
The minister also highlighted Ballia railway station in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, 82 trains operate from Ballia. The station has historical and cultural significance. A few years ago, it had far fewer services. Now, increased trains connect nearby towns and districts. Passengers have more options. Travel has become more convenient. As per the official this also helps the local businesses and commuters who depend on railways.
Budget Increase for Uttar Pradesh Railway Projects
Before 2014 the budget allocated around 100 crore. The Railway Minister talked about the rise in the Railway budget for Uttar Pradesh. That was insufficient for a large state. Today, the budget has increased several times. The additional funds have been used for building new tracks, doubling existing lines, electrification, and redeveloping stations. Several pending projects have now moved forward. Vaishnaw described the increase as “historic” for the state.
Officials quoted that with the advancement of budget has amplified the connectivity in rural and semi-urban areas. Previously the town had limited rail services and are now better connected. Passengers notice shorter travel times and more convenient train options.
Bridges and Safety Measures
As safety is the most important aspect and should always be in priority. Speeding up the work of road underbridges and overbridges as per the Minister. Over 100 ready to use bridge designs have been prepared. These can be implemented quickly without waiting for long approvals. The designs cater to high density traffic areas and semi-urban zones. Quick approvals reduce construction time and improve safety near level crossings.
Punctuality During High Traffic
Passenger and freight traffic on Indian Railways is increasing. Heavy traffic previously caused frequent delays. Now, monitoring systems, maintenance improvements, and better coordination have reduced these delays. Officials say trains are more predictable, and passengers can plan trips with more confidence. Also with the Train running status passengers can maintain the timing by going through the tool.
Commuters have noticed the change. “Trains are arriving on time now,” said one passenger. Another added, “It’s easier to make travel plans.” The Railway Minister will decide and give surety to upgrade the requirements such as station, signals, tracks and safety system. Upgrading these requirements in the coming years will improve punctuality.
