Indian Railways Completes Manufacturing of Its First Hydrogen-Powered Train Set

Initiative taken by the Indian Railway, and this significant step aims to focus on sustainable rail transport. By completing the manufacturing of its first hydrogen-powered train set. The pilot project has been undertaken in line with the specification that is based on the Research, Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). It is done to demonstrate the hydrogen-powered train technology within the Indian Railway network.

The Indian railway initiative leaves a long-lasting mark as it fuels the advancement of technology to the next level. The major concern is to align it with national goals, and the aim is to reduce carbon emissions and assist the cleanest mode of transportation.

Hydrogen-Powered Train Set Production Plant Planned at Jind

Support is required for the hydrogen train set, so the Indian Railway has devised a green hydrogen production plant at Jind. Through the electrolysis process, they have generated hydrogen, a key factor in the production of green hydrogen

The hydrogen production produces electricity by the process of electrolysis, which helps to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Ensures the clean energy that becomes the source for the train set.  This is an integration, and it highlights the Indian Railways’ focus not only on the rolling stock but also on the infrastructure and energy operations.

Once this train has launched, you will get the option to check Seat availability.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train-Set

The hydrogen-powered train set showcases several notable features that underline its technological advancement and engineering scale:

  • Designed and developed in India, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • Recognised as the world’s longest hydrogen train-set, consisting of 10 coaches, operating on the broad gauge platform
  • Equipped with a total power output of 2400 kW, making it the most powerful hydrogen train set globally
  • Includes two Driving Power Cars (DPCs) of 1200 kW each, along with eight passenger coaches
  • Operates with zero carbon dioxide emissions, releasing only water vapour as a by-product

These features position the train set as a major technological milestone in global railway innovation.

Pilot Project with End-to-End Indigenous Development

Indian Railways is developing the Hydrogen train through end-to-end project execution. The organisation is manufacturing it as a prototype and deploying hydrogen traction technology for the first time.

Quote by Indian Railways, it is not the right time and stage to conduct a direct cost comparison between hydrogen-powered trains and existing traction systems.

When hydrogen train will start in India?

Indian Railways is ready to set its hydrogen train India in 2026. This landmark set a move towards green mobility as it is the country’s first hydrogen-powered train.

Step Towards Cleaner and Greener Rail Transport

This initiative has set a commendable markin the development of technologies within Indian Railways. It’s a great work to adopt the Hydrogen as the best and cleanest energy source. The focus is to minimize environment footprint, and the aim is to provide sustainable solutions for the operation of the rail.

Indian railways fortify the by the project, and it’s a commitment to energy transition, innovation, and environmentally friendly transport solutions. This will help in contributing to a greener future and a cleaner environment.
