Kalyan Junction hosts about 580,000 passengers every single day. There are eight platforms with two ghat sections on either side pulling in opposite directions. Kalyan Junction isn’t flashy and glamaorous like CSMT, but pull this station off the and the train connectivity of the region begins to wobble.
Check your train time table of train from Kalyan Junction, using RailMitra’s platform. It is better to check the train schedule online, than to keep staring at the train board at the platform only to see a 2 minute Pan Masala commercial.
What Makes Kalyan Junction Different from Other Stations
After CSMT, every train heads toward Kalyan Junction on one shared track with LTT services mixed in. After that, they go separate ways. North-east toward Kasara and Nashik. South-east toward Karjat and Pune. That split is what makes Kalyan the station it is.
Second, the Ghats. Both the Thal Ghat on the north-eastern side and the Bhor Ghat toward Pune involve steep gradients. Heavy trains need banking locomotives attached at the rear before attempting the climb. Kasara and Karjat handle the banking operations, but the logistics are coordinated from Kalyan’s shed. That is 102 diesel locomotives managed here, including 64 WDG-4 and 4D units used on freight and ghat climbs.
Platform allocation at the station keeps local and express services from tangling. Platforms 4 and 6 take trains heading out toward Kasara and Khopoli. Platforms 5 and 7 are for CSMT-bound services. Long-distance expresses use Platforms 4 through 7 specifically.
