What makes super Vasuki train special

A really long freight train, about 3.5 kilometers, carried over 27,000 tons of coal. The South East Central Railway tested it between Korba and Rajnandgaon on August 15. Train departed from Korba at 1:50 pm and traveled for about 11 hours and 20 minutes to cover 267 kilometers.

Super Vasuki is all about

This super Vasuki train is capable of supplying enough fuel to generate 3000 MW of power for an entire day, marking a record in Indian Railways’ fuel transportation. To put it in perspective, traditional railway setups can transport about 9,000 tonnes of coal in one trip using 90 cars carrying 100 tonnes each.

Imagine a team of strong freight trains, like Vasuki, Trishul, and SheshNaag, which were record-breakers before becoming a new addition called Super Vasuki, managed by the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone. It is not about just one train, it’s like a powerful combination of five amazing trains working together as one mega-team.

What does Super Vasuki do?

The railways plan to use the Super Vasuki or longer freight trains more frequently to transport coal to ensure there are no fuel shortages at power stations in peak demand season. Coal, one of the most  important cargo carried by trains.

The Indian Railways is trying out longer freight trains to carry more goods over longer distances. By doing this and running several groups of these trains, they hope to save time for transportation and ease the crowdedness on the railway tracks.

Highlights about Super Vasuki

  • The freight train stretched over 3.5 kilometers.
  • In the test run, six locomotives, 295 wagons, and a total weight of 25,962 tonnes made it the longest and heaviest freight train ever operated by the Railways.
  • The train was made by combining five groups of freight trains into one big train.
  • Officials noted that the amount of coal transported by the Super Vasuki could generate power for a 3000 MW plant for an entire day. This is three times the capacity of existing railway rakes (90 cars with 100 tonnes in each) which carries about 9,000 tonnes of coal in one journey.
  • The train completed its journey in 11.20 hours.
