Indian Railways Has Set a Target of Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030

Indian Railways has set a target of ‘Net Zero’ carbon emission by 2030. The railway is working on the goal of its operation in the country with the help of solar energy.

Rail News: Indian Railways has decided to set up a solar plant on its vacant lands. With its help, the trains will be run on solar energy. Railways have set a target of creating a ‘net zero carbon emission transportation network’ by 2030. The railway has started work to achieve the goal of this project. Railways have installed a solar power plant on its vacant land in Bina, Madhya Pradesh under the pilot project. The solar plant will produce 1.7 MW of electricity, which will help in the operation of trains.

Railways Aim to Become a Fully Green Mode of Transportation

Railways have also started issuing tenders to install solar power plants on their vacant lands. So far, two bids have been considered. Apart from these, a pilot project is going to start soon in Bina, Madhya Pradesh. The aim is to make the railways a fully green mode of transportation through solar energy. Indian Railways will be the organisation in the world to meet its own energy needs through solar energy. By using solar energy, the Indian Railways will become a green railway. They will also make a significant contribution to the goal of self-reliant India.

How Does the Technology of Solar Trains Work?

The use of solar technology in running trains is the first such project in the world. It is being realised in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Through this technology, the trains will entirely run on solar energy. Under this technology, the direct current is converted into alternating current, and it is directly connected to the overhead traction system.

Bina Solar Power Plant

About 2.5 million units of electricity will be generated annually from the Bina Solar Power Plant. This solar plant will save the Railways Rs. 1.37 Crores annually. Bina’s project was signed between Railways and BHEL on 09 October 2019.

Railway’s Solar Power Plant

Under the pilot project, a 50 MWP solar power plant is being prepared in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, which will be completed before 31 March 2021. The railway’s third solar energy pilot project has been installed on the railway land near Deewana village in Fatehabad district of Haryana.

Plan to Set up Solar Panel Plant along the Railway Line

The railway is working on the plan to install solar panel plant along the shore of the railway line. This plan will also increase the safety of railway tracks and will also save from illegal occupation of railway lands. All these reasons will also help in increasing the speed of the train.

The Solar panel plant will increase the safety of railway tracks. It will also save from illegal capture of railway lands. Electricity generation will save infrastructure costs. All these reasons will also help in increasing the speed of the trains. Keeping in mind the solar panel plants along the railway track, REMCL will soon issue tenders for a total capacity of 1 GHz.
