New Indian Railways Update: Aadhaar OTP Needed For Tatkal On 322 Trains

Indian Railways has quietly made one of its most significant changes to the Tatkal system in years. Aadhaar-based OTP verification, which many passengers earlier saw only during sensitive updates, is now compulsory for Tatkal bookings on 322 trains made through the online portal. Officials told Parliament that this single change has already altered booking behaviour. The period during which a confirmed Tatkal seat remains available has increased by almost 65%, something regular travellers say they have not seen in a very long time.

For years, passengers complained that Tatkal seats vanished before they even finished entering their details. Much of that was blamed on bots, automated scripts, and certain agents who managed to bypass normal queues. By forcing an OTP verification tied to the passenger’s Aadhaar number, the Railways has added a barrier that automated tools cannot cross easily. And that, officials said, is the reason more genuine travellers are now getting a chance to book their tickets instead of losing out in the first few seconds.

New Indian Railway Aadhar Otp Verification Rule

The same process has been added to offline bookings as well. Aadhaar-based OTP verification has now been brought in at reservation counters for 211 trains, and the rollout is still underway. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that nearly 95% of the 96 busiest trains reviewed by the ministry saw improved Tatkal availability after the system was introduced. For many of these trains, the improvement was immediate. So before booking the train ticket tatkal check train seat availabilityand follow the proper process.

Vaishnaw also noted that several complaints about strangely booked PNRs had been reported on the National Cyber Crime Portal. These reports, he said, show why the Railways needed a tighter verification process. Identity-based authentication, according to the minister, helps the system screen out bulk operations and suspicious booking patterns before they create bigger problems.

Stronger Cybersecurity Backbone Powers Safer Railway Bookings

To make these changes work without exposing passengers to cyber risks. The Railways has upgraded the entire digital security setup behind its booking network. Officials say the system now runs behind multiple protective layers. There are the points network firewalls, intrusion detection tools, and updated application filters that scan traffic in real time. Indian Railways houses its booking infrastructure inside a dedicated data centre, restricts entry, runs round-the-clock surveillance, and encrypts all critical data exchanges end to end. The centre also follows ISO 27001 ISMS guidelines, which outline international standards for handling sensitive information.

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. is also part of this overhaul. The company provides early alerts on cyber threats, including signals from the deep web and dark web, and helps remove harmful or suspicious digital activity through takedown services. These warnings allow the Railways to react quickly instead of waiting for an outage or a breach.

Officials say these changes are starting to bring some order to Tatkal bookings. Passengers who rely on last-minute travel may slowly notice the difference, with booking windows.  Staying open a bit longer and fewer frantic moments at the counter. Better to check the train schedule and get the idea of which train is appropriate to cut the tatkal tickets. The railway ministry expects Aadhaar-OTP checks to make Tatkal bookings. Passengers are dependable during festival rushes, long weekends, and other peak travel days when timing matters the most.
