The Ahmedabad to Mumbai train route runs under Western Railway and most people book it like any other intercity journey, not quite registering that this is one of the most commercially loaded corridors in the country. 491 km, give or take depending on the terminal. Surat is on this line. Vadodara. Bharuch, Vapi. The trains passing through these stops are not just moving passengers. RailMitra’s Train Schedule page shows everything running on your travel date, including live seat counts, so you are not guessing what is still open.
Major Stations in Ahmedabad to Mumbai Route
There are several important stations and stops in this corporate and business hub of the country. These are:
Vadodara Junction is 100 km from Ahmedabad and handles over 250 trains a day. Day expresses stop here 3 to 5 minutes. The volume makes more sense when you know this is where the Ahmedabad mainline meets the New Delhi-Mumbai line via Kota. Two trunk routes crossing at one station does that to a platform.
229 km from Ahmedabad, Surat Junction has 381 trains passing through daily. The diamond polishing and textile trade here generates commercial passenger traffic in both directions, not just commuters going one way.
Bharuch Junction connects out to branch lines serving Dahej Port. It does not look like much on a map but freight movement through this area is significant. Two-minute halt for expresses.
Vapi is around the 322 km mark. Chemical manufacturing clusters of Vapi, Daman, and Silvassa all route through this single station. Over 206 trains a day.
Borivali. From Ahmedabad, plenty hop on the rails without any plan to reach Mumbai Central. Instead, Andheri pulls them out early, then Goregaon, sometimes Malad, often Kandivali. For many riders, that’s enough – feet touch platform at Borivali just as the city begins to crowd up ahead.
Mumbai Central: nine platforms, direct connection to the Western Line suburban. Most premium trains end here.
Vande Bharat: Fastest Trains on This Corridor
Early on, Train 22962 pulls out of Ahmedabad Junction as the clock shows six-oh-five. By late morning it rolls into Mumbai Central where time stands at eleven-forty-five. The stretch between takes five hours and forty minutes, neither fast nor slow. That gap fills with changing views outside the windows. No Sunday service, so if you are travelling on the weekend this one is only available Saturday. Thursday and Friday it fills up early.
Later that day, Train 20902 rolls out from Gandhinagar Capital. It touches Ahmedabad by two fifty in the afternoon. Five hours later, around eight thirty-five, it pulls into Mumbai Central. The full ride takes about five hours and forty-five minutes. Does not run Wednesdays.
Traveling in CC on the 22962 costs roughly INR 1,200 up to 1,220; meals come included. For EC, expect to pay between INR 2,295 and 2,315 – same deal, food covered. Now, the 20902 runs pricier across the board. Its CC seats range from INR 1,385 to 1,460. As for EC, prices swing wider, landing anywhere from INR 1,980 to 2,505, yet still include dining.
If someone is picking you up at Mumbai Central, Live Train Status on RailMitra gives real-time position for both Vande Bharat services so they are not stuck waiting at the kerb.
Tejas and Shatabdi: Premium Daytime, More Stops
Leaving Ahmedabad just after half past six, IRCTC Tejas Express rolls as train number 82902. Morning light stretches when it pulls into Mumbai Central with the arrival stamped at ten past one. Seven hours shape the journey, quiet moments passing through stations along the way. Six hours forty-five. IRCTC runs it privately and uses dynamic pricing, so CC fares sit anywhere between INR 1,502 and 1,680 depending on when you check, EC going up to INR 2,370. No service Thursday. The six remaining days it operates.
Out of Delhi by 3:10 p.m., train 12010 rolls into Mumbai Central at 9:45. That’s six hours and thirty-five minutes flat, daily, no exceptions. Tickets cost one thousand eighty rupees for CC class, while EC runs you two thousand seventy. The Vistadome option? Two thousand two hundred twenty bucks. Want more space, better view? Then Anubhuti will set you back two thousand three hundred seventy. This train’s been making the trip longer than most people remember.
Both halt at Vadodara and Surat. Around Diwali and long weekends these two get tight fast. Running a Train Seat Availability check a week ahead is not overkill on either of them.
Overnight Expresses
Four trains worth separating out here.
Twice past midnight each week, the rails hum under Pune Duronto with the train numbered 12297. Three days a week it rolls: Tuesday, then again on Friday, Sunday tagging last. Wheels turn at 22:30 sharp, no delay. With fewer stations to tap along the way, time shrinks. Five hours, ten minutes, that’s all it takes to cross the stretch. Stops skipped mean speed gained, nothing more. Fastest overnight journey on the legacy line.
Daily option: MMCT Duronto, Train 12268, at 01:10. Later start time balances things out. On time departure from Mumbai Central at 08:05 sharp. Just air-con carriages available with the third class economy priced at INR 1,235, while third AC nudges up to INR 1,330. Second AC? That’s INR 1,845. First AC starts where that leaves off, at INR 2,255, then steps beyond.
Early each night, Gujarat Mail rolls out as train number 12902. This one’s been moving long before today’s travelers came along. Departure hits at ten fifty in the evening from Ahmedabad. Morning light finds it pulling into Dadar Western by six fifteen. The trip spans seven hours and a quarter past. For comfort, start low as the sleeper class asks just 335 rupees. Climb higher if needed, all the way to first AC, priced at nineteen hundred fifty. Between them? Three air-conditioned levels fill the gap. Few routes offer such range within a single ride.
Midnight ride kicks off at ten past ten with the train number 22904 rolls out as BDTS SF AC Express. Reaches Bandra Terminus close to five in the morning, after a six-hour stretch. Runs every day without fail, fully air-conditioned throughout. Folks heading toward the westside neighborhoods find this stop far more convenient. Landing at Mumbai Central means starting way down at the opposite tip of the local train trail.
Budget Overnight Options
Midnight marks the start, but by 7:35 a.m., Garib Rath express numbered 12215 departs Bandra Terminus. Tickets for AC Three-Tier range between six hundred twenty and one thousand one hundred sixty-five rupees. This ride happens only on set days as Mondays kick things off, followed by Tuesdays, while Thursdays show up later; Saturdays wrap it all up. Not a daily train so calendar check is necessary.
Out of Ahmedabad every night, the Aravali Express rolls as 14701. Pulling away at nine fifty p.m., it slips into Bandra Terminus come six fifteen a.m. Eight hours and twenty-five minutes fill the journey start to finish. Pick a sleeper seat for three hundred five rupees when funds are tight. Otherwise, the third AC costs seven ninety-five, the second AC stands at eleven twenty-five, while the three-tier economy sits at seven forty. Tickets change price based on class choice.
Booked already and checking your coach number? Checking your seat confirmation live? RailMitra uses the 10-digit PNR to fetch current seat details or PNR Status instantly. With every search, up-to-date coach and berth info appears straight away.
Budget Daytime Options

From five in the morning it goes, arriving at twelve thirty at Mumbai Central. Daily without fail, never skipped, meals not included. Each day follows the same path, no changes made along the way.
Other Trains Passing Through
Early morning light hits the tracks as Saurashtra Express, numbered 19016, pulls out of Porbandar. By 07:20 it rolls into Ahmedabad, quiet and on time. Night begins to fall when the same train reaches Dadar Western as the clock shows 19:20. Twelve hours pass like that, steady, one after another. Daily. Covers intermediate stations the faster expresses skip. Train berth costs start low. A sleeper runs three hundred and five rupees. Moving up, the third AC hits seven hundred ninety-five. Second AC steps higher, past a thousand at twelve twenty-five. First AC? That one clears eighteen seventy-five.

Food Delivery on Trains
Pantry car food is what you get when you have not planned. Whatever was cooked in bulk, served at whatever temperature, by whoever is walking the aisle. Most passengers who have done this route a few times know to plan differently.
RailMitra links to FSSAI-certified restaurant kitchens at major stations along the corridor. You put in your PNR, the system checks your train’s real-time position against NTES data, and the kitchen times preparation around your actual arrival at that station, not the scheduled one. Running two hours late means the food is not sitting there getting cold.
Ahmedabad Junction has Honest Food Plaza, Hotel Sagar, China Hut. Thepla, fafda, khichdi, veg thali. The 06:05 Vande Bharat is early enough that most people have not eaten. This is the fix.
Vadodara has Offside Lounge, Hotel Samrat, Gayatri Bhavan. Order the Gujarati thali here or go for the shrikhand and lassi if it is a summer afternoon. The 3 to 5 minute halt is enough time if the order is placed at least an hour ahead.
Surat: Tipsy Topsy, Navjeevan Hotel, Gujjus. Surti handvo and khichdi. The local sweets follow a different preparation method than Vadodara, worth ordering separately if you have not tried them.
Vapi has non-vegetarian options at some outlets. Rogan josh, nihari, gosht korma, alongside the standard veg thali.
Train food delivery through RailMitra covers Vande Bharat, Duronto, Gujarat Mail, Shatabdi and most express trains on this corridor. Place the order a few hours before your delivery station.
Which Ahmedabad to Mumbai Train to Book
Earliest arrival in Mumbai: 06:05 Vande Bharat. Noon arrival, morning available in Ahmedabad, no stops to speak of.
Same day but afternoon departure: the 14:50 Vande Bharat or the 15:10 Shatabdi. The Vande Bharat is forty minutes faster. The Shatabdi has more class options and the Anubhuti coach if that matters to you.
Spending the night without spending much? Try Gujarat Mail as the sleeper berth costs 335 rupees. Need air conditioning instead? Aravali offers 3A at 795 rupees. Garib Rath has lower AC prices, though it skips some days. Before deciding, take a look at the schedule.
Daytime with the lowest possible fare: Karnavati Express at INR 205 for Second Seating, daily, no question.
Availability is the main variable on the Ahmedabad to Mumbai train corridor. Both Vande Bharat services and the Tejas fill up days before peak travel dates. Book ahead on those or keep a backup overnight option in mind.
