Indian Railways is upgrading the LHB coaches and stepping away from the ICF (Integral Coach Factory) and these coaches are being replaced with modern LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch).

There are several advantages of LHB coaches: they consist of a longer car body for extra space, most importantly, provide comfort, LED lighting, and the most convenient are 5-pin sockets and disc brakes for safe and smooth braking. It consists of four emergency openable windows that are so important for smooth and quick evacuation and an Emergency Light Unit (ELU) with a great backup of 6 hours. 

This initiative is basically taken by the Indian Railways to replace the conventional coaches with LHB coaches in selected trains. With the new LHB coaches in 8 trains and on a permanent basis for better safety and to offer the best passenger experience. What is LHB coach in train

LHB coaches pack advanced safety features and deliver multiple upgrades that improve the travel experience. They use anti-climbing devices, fire-retardant materials, and can run at 160 kmph, with designs that support speeds up to 200 kmph. In contrast, older ICF coaches operate only up to about 140 kmph.

The difference between LHB and ICF coaches

LHB coaches are different from traditional ICF coaches. The LHB are modern, safe and offer comfortable rides, good suspension and high speed capacity and limit the noise. Made with stainless steel and anti-telescopic features. The LHB coaches minimise the damage during accidents and don’t require much maintenance. ICF coaches are older, bigger and noisier and appropriate for telescoping, making it less comfortable and safe for the passengers.
