Delhi to Chandigarh by Train: Timings, Fares & Food on Board
Delhi to Chandigarh by train, the distance is somewhere between 244 and 271 kilometres. Depends on the Delhi station. Five of them feed into this route. On any given day, around 69 trains run. Some reach Chandigarh in under three hours. Others take more than five. Sleeper Class tickets start below ₹200. Executive Chair Car on Shatabdi crosses ₹1,600. Checking the Train Schedule on RailMitra before booking saves the back and forth.
Stations Between Delhi to Chandigarh
Six stations sit between the Delhi NCR terminals and Chandigarh. Worth knowing, especially for food orders and platform stretches.
Sonipat Junction (SNP)
First major stop north of Delhi, roughly 50 kilometres out is Sonipat Junction. Mostly local and passenger trains halt here. Long-distance expresses like Shatabdi and Vande Bharat skip it entirely. If your train does stop, the halt is short.
Panipat Junction (PNP)
About 90 kilometres from Delhi is Panipat Junction. Three battles were fought near this city. The station does not particularly advertise this. Stop is 2 to 5 minutes on most trains. Enough time for a platform tea, nothing more. Gagan Rasoi handles food delivery here through RailMitra for trains that do halt.
Kurukshetra Junction (KKDE)
Just beyond the Mahabharata lands sits Brahma Sarovar. Crowds of pilgrims gather there, though most are moving on – northward they go, bound for Vaishno Devi or perhaps Haridwar instead. Around 74 trains pass daily. RailMitra lists vegetarian and Sattvic options at this stop, Hotel Kimaya among them. Stop duration varies by train.
Ambala Cantt Junction (UMB)
Here, tracks divide – some heading north to Amritsar, others curving into Himachal. Trains pause longer at Ambala Cantt than anywhere else, between five and ten minutes. More than three hundred roll through each day. The town hosts a large military community. UMB stands as the main rail hub across this entire section. Ruskin Bond wrote about a woman on Platform 8 at Ambala. Platform 8 does not exist at this station.
Food at Ambala is worth ordering. Bachan Da Dhaba and Ambala Food are listed on RailMitra. Dal Makhani here is not railway food. Actual Punjabi dhaba cooking.
Ambala City Junction (AWB)
A few kilometres from Ambala Cantt, lies Ambala City Junction, a separate station entirely. Fewer trains stop here. Mostly passenger services. Long-distance trains use Cantt.
Rajpura Junction (RPJ)
Rajpura Junction is the last major stop before Chandigarh, around 30 kilometres out. Some express trains halt here. Quick stop, usually 2 minutes. Close enough to Chandigarh that most passengers are already gathering their bags.
Which Delhi Station Are You Starting From?
Passengers often get confused while boarding a train at Delhi, as there isn’t just one station to go to. In fact, there are as many as five railway stations in Delhi.
The first one is the New Delhi (NDLS) where all the premium services are available. All major trains, be it Vande Bharat or Shatabdi Express trains all pass through this railway station. One more key stop in the city goes by the name Old Delhi, labeled DLI. Even though only a few services begin here, nearly every long route moves past its platforms. To reach western or southern zones, catching a train at Nizamuddin, coded NZM, often makes better sense. Travelers might also step onto rails at Sarai Rohilla, known as DEE, or pick Delhi Cantt, marked DEC, depending on direction. Each spot serves distinct paths across the rail map.
Before leaving, travelers should confirm where they board. Where a person gets on matters just as much as the ticket itself. Starting off at the wrong stop can cause delays nobody wants. Each trip begins with checking that detail first. Getting it right means things move smoothly later.
The Fast Ones: Vande Bharat and Shatabdi
Under three and a half hours: only these trains get there that quickly.
| Train Name | Number | From | Departure | Arrival (CDG) | Duration | Days |
| Vande Bharat Express | 22447 | NDLS | 05:50 | 08:38 | 2h 48m | Except Tue |
| Kalka Shatabdi | 12011 | NDLS | 07:40 | 10:59 | 3h 19m | Daily |

| Kalka Shatabdi | 12005 | NDLS | 17:15 | 20:30 | 3h 15m | Daily |
| CDG Vande Bharat | 20977 | DEC | 11:35 | 14:45 | 3h 10m | Except Sun |
Vande Bharat 22447 does it in 2 hours 48 minutes. Six days, Tuesday off. The 05:50 departure is early but Chandigarh before 9 AM is worth it for most people.
Shatabdi trains run daily or close. Office commuters tend to prefer them over Vande Bharat because Chair Car and Executive both work, and class flexibility matters when plans shift. Meals come included on most Shatabdi runs. On Vande Bharat, opting out of the meal is not always possible.
Live Train Status on the day of travel is worth checking. Winter fog delays on this corridor are not rare.
Mid-Speed Option: Jan Shatabdi
Jan Shatabdi 12057 departs New Delhi at 14:35, Chandigarh by 18:47. Four hours twelve minutes. Not fast, but afternoon departure suits those not tied to an early start, and fares run lower than premium Shatabdi. Runs daily.
Train Seat Availability on Fridays and Sundays: check it early. This one fills up.
Express Trains: Longer but Cheaper
Journey time between 4 and 5 and a half hours. Sleeper and general class fares are much lower.
| Train Name | Number | From | Departure | Arrival (CDG) | Duration | Days |
| Unchahar Express | 14217 | DLI | 04:15 | 09:15 | 5h 00m | Daily |
| DLI KLK Express | 14331 | DLI | 16:15 | 21:02 | 4h 47m | Daily |

| AGC HSX Express | 11905 | NDLS | 22:35 | 03:13 | 4h 38m | Daily |
| BDTS CDG SF Exp | 22451 | DEC | 10:18 | 14:15 | 3h 57m | Mon, Thu |
Unchahar Express at 04:15 from Old Delhi. Early start, though Chandigarh by nine fifteen without needing a pricier ticket. From Mumbai’s Bandra station rolls the Paschim Express. Most mornings, it drags behind even before hitting Nizamuddin. Live Train Status before leaving home is not optional for this one.
Trains That Pass Through: Long-Distance Services
Long-haul trains from other states that stop at Chandigarh without originating there.
| Train Name | Number | Originates From | Arrival at CDG | Days |

| SNSI Kalka Exp | 22455 | Sainagar Shirdi | 11:27 | Selected days |
| SBP JAT Express | 18309 | Sambalpur | 02:53 | Selected days |
Useful only if Chandigarh is your stop on a longer journey. Otherwise a Delhi-origin train is simpler. Overnight arrivals at Chandigarh fall between 1 and 5 AM. Fine if someone is receiving you, less fine otherwise.
