This train runs on long distance trains and makes no or the minimum possible stoppages. This train usually connects two important cities of the region providing faster connectivity where there are no other premium services operating.

What Is the Duronto Express?

From Bengali comes the word Duronto, meaning restless or uninterrupted. September 2009 is when the first Duronto Express ran, Sealdah to New Delhi, built around a single idea: get there fast, stop as little as possible.

At launch, almost no commercial halts. You boarded at the origin and that was that until the final destination. 2016 changed things somewhat. Technical halts at crew change points started converting to commercial stops, so boarding mid-route became possible. The non-stop character has softened since then. Still, compared to standard express trains, the stop count stays low.

Classes Available

Not all Duronto trains carry every class. The typical mix:

First AC (1A): Two-berth coupes and four-berth cabins. Sliding doors that lock from inside. Meals come on proper crockery. The quietest option on any overnight Duronto.

Second AC (2A): Four-berth bays with curtains. Comfortable overnight, nothing unusual here.

Third AC (3A): Six berths per bay plus side berths. Standard AC sleeper.

Third AC Economy (3E): 83 berths per coach instead of 72. Three side berths per bay is how the extra capacity fits in. Individual AC vents, reading lamps, USB charging. Popular on busy routes because the fare sits close to Sleeper class pricing.

Sleeper (SL): Only on select Duronto services where the route serves a wider passenger base.

Duronto Express Fare and Pricing

Duronto Express fares work on dynamic pricing. Only the first ten percent of seats in a class get the base fare. Each time another ten percent of seats in a class gets sold, the price goes up another ten percent. It stops climbing once the train crosses half capacity, where it stays fixed at fifty percent above the original base fare.

Tatkal is available too. But on a Duronto running at 70 or 80 percent occupancy, Tatkal on top of a peaked dynamic fare gets expensive quickly. Book when the window opens.

Duronto Express Routes: Eastern and South Eastern Zone

Most of the action in this zone starts from Kolkata, spread across Howrah and Sealdah stations.

Most seats fill up on 12262 CSMT Duronto Express, when workers head out early in the week. This train covers nearly two thousand kilometers linking Howrah with Mumbai CSMT. It moves through five regions rich in minerals and industry. Departing on four specific days, its coaches stay packed. Steel laborers ride often using this route. From West Bengal it moves through Jharkhand, slips into Odisha next, continues on toward Chhattisgarh, ending at Maharashtra.

Duronto Express Routes: Western and Central Zone

From among CSMT, Lokmanyatilak, or Mumbai Central, Duronto trains begin moving out of Mumbai at different spots. Where one leaves depends entirely on its destination down the line.

At 20:15, Train 12289 rolls from Mumbai CSMT toward Nagpur every single day. This ride covers 837 kilometers. It reaches before eight the following morning. Duronto Express Routes: Southern, South Central and South Western Zone

The south contributes the most Duronto services by volume. Fanning out from Chennai, departures also begin in Secunderabad. Another starting point shows up in Bengaluru, along with Visakhapatnam nearby. Puri joins the pattern, just before Ernakulam closes the list.

Most of the journeys in the above mentioned list take more than a day to cover the journey. Because of this a special D2 or D3 has been added in their timings. The arrival timings mentioned in the table should be calculated on that basis. The date of Departure should be considered D1, the next day D2 and so on.

Food on the Duronto Express

You don’t have to worry about the food on this train as the ticket price itself includes the meals that will be served. Railway vendors will bring the food to your seat when the serving time arrives. The number of food items provided is more generous for passengers who travel longer than the ones travelling on shorter routes. 

The standard cycle covers morning tea, breakfast, lunch, high tea, and dinner. Regional variation depends on the route. On the Bengaluru Howrah Duronto, breakfast might be idli or upma, lunch a rice and dal combination.

What the TAG 2026 Changes Mean for Duronto Passengers

TAG 2026, the Timetable of Trains reform from early 2026, sped up 549 trains across the network. For Duronto, the gains came mostly from timing adjustments at congested sections. Mumbai to Hapa now runs consistently within 11 hours 20 minutes despite picking up commercial stops at Surendranagar and Rajkot.

Certain Duronto services were reclassified under this reform. Some routes converted to Humsafar or Jan Shatabdi format where that made more sense for the traffic pattern. If a route you used before no longer appears as a Duronto, this is likely why.

Is Vande Bharat Replacing Duronto?

Vande Bharat Sleeper is now running on select corridors. Faster on paper, 160 km/h capability, fully integrated propulsion. But it does not cover every route the Duronto does, particularly the longer ones where Sleeper class volumes matter for making the economics work.

What Duronto has done is hold on to ultra-long corridors where 2A, 3A, and SL class mix is the practical requirement. Ernakulam to Delhi, Bengaluru to Howrah: these are not natural Vande Bharat Sleeper territory yet.

So the two are not on identical routes. Not at the moment anyway.

A Proposed Duronto That Could Change Things

A Bengaluru to Mumbai Duronto has been proposed in the 2026 railway budget. If it runs:

Right now, the Udyan Express along with other trains using this route usually need about a day to finish the trip, occasionally stretching beyond that mark. Shaving six hours off is a real change for anyone commuting between the two cities for work. Routing is planned via Tumakuru, Davangere, and Hubballi, track sections where speeds have gone up after recent upgrades.
