Indian Railways is going through a major change in train ticket booking from August 2026. The upcoming new reservation system will replace the 40-years old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) without any inconvenience to train passengers.
The Ministry of Railways stated that a review meeting was held on May 07, 2026 to ensure a smooth transition to the upgraded system from August. The upcoming change in the ticket booking process are expected to make faster and convenient ticket booking.
Upcoming Changes in Train Ticket Booking
As per a review meeting held on Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directly ensured the smooth transition of trains from the 40-year old train ticket booking system to the upcoming upgraded system.
The Railway Ministry also stated that Union Ministers of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh and V. Somanna, were also present in the review meeting. The upcoming changes will improve the ticket booking experience with better ticket confirmation probability.
Key Points in Indian Railways Review Meeting
The review meeting considered different points to make an upgrade in the current system for better outcome. Some of the key points were as follows.
Why Indian Railways is Upgrading Train Ticket Booking System
- The Indian Railways booking system has gone through different minor changes in the last 40 years. Now, it is time to upgrade to a higher capacity with the latest technology.
- In 2002, Indian Railways introduced the online ticket booking system, which is now so popular that 88% of ticket booking demands are filled by online channels.
- The RailOne mobile app was also considered due to its rapid popularity among train travellers. The app was released in July last year and resulted in 3.5 crore downloads in less than a year.
Reasons for Online Train Ticket Booking Upgradation
- The Railway Ministry also stated that one of the main reasons for application popularity is its different train features, such as train schedule, PNR status, resolved complaints, and other services.
- The app also includes the PNR prediction, which helps to find the ticket confirmation chances. With time, the confirmation accuracy has increased with AI-driven improvement from 53% to 94%.
- This app integrates multiple train services in one platform, assisting passengers to book train ticket, cancel reservations, or refund process at the same place.
- Among different train apps, this app is featuring all the services like live train running status, platform information, coach position, and service like Rail Madad for passengers comfort.
- This app is also offering food in train during the journey. However, other train food delivery apps are also offering train meals from the FSSAI-approved restaurants.
- The major reason to present the update in the reservation ticket booking is the number of daily bookings. Every day, the RailOne app books about 9.29 lakh tickets, which includes 7.2 lakh general ticket booking and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets.
Train Ticket Price after System Upgradation
Currently, there is no such information shared by the Ministry of Railways. However, they have shared that Indian Railways is provided a subsidy of Rs. 60,239 crore in 2024 – 2025 on passenger tickets.
Impact of Subsidy on Each Passenger
- As per the Railway Ministry, the subsidy is reducing the overall ticket cost per passenger and making it more affordable for everyone.
- The subsidy offers about 43% discount on each train ticket booking, making it affordable for each passenger.
- This means, if the cost of providing the train service is Rs. 100, then the ticket price is only Rs. 57, which makes the reservation ticket more affordable.
Conclusion
From August 2026, railway passengers may see an upgrade in the ticket system to transform ticket booking with AI-powered features and faster booking speed. Integrated services and improved PNR prediction can offer smart train travel from August onwards.
