Kanchanjunga Express: Route, Schedule, Stops and Fare Details
Passengers who are looking to explore the taste of eastern India find Kanchanjunga Express as one of the best rides. This iconic train starts its journey from the Sealdah Railway station and takes passengers to Tripura and Assam. There are actually two trains with this name, one goes to Tripura while the other one heads for Assam.
Kanchanjunga Express covers more than 1000 kilometres in the Sealdah to Silchar train route and the Sealdah to Sabroom train route being longer than 1500 kilometres of distance. The first train covers four states while the latter covers up to five different states. Both of the trains take about 30-40 hours to cover their journey. Most of the passengers include students or passengers travelling for medical reasons.
Updated departure timings are worth verifying on the Train Schedule at RailMitra before booking, since timetable revisions do happen.
Kanchanjunga Express: Two Trains Running Under One Name
Not everyone realises two separate services exist under the Kanchanjunga Express name. Both leave from Sealdah. Both share rakes. But different destinations await at the end.
13173/13174 goes all the way to Sabroom. Southern Tripura, Feni River on one side, Bangladesh on the other. The 1,659 km distance is covered with nearly thirty-eight hours unfolding during travel.
Deep in Assam’s Barak Valley lies Silchar, reached via train 13175/13176 from Sealdah. This route is around 1,355 km which is about 300 less than the Sabroom run.
Each dawn at 06:50, departure happens from platform 12 with twin services beginning life close to Siliguri. Named for Kangchenjunga, a peak once visible when the train route was quite smaller. Now the train route has been enlarged significantly and the mountain is still sometimes visible if the skies are clear.
Distance crept upward slowly until, notably beyond 1983, routes were expanded. By late 2025, both lines began using modern LHB coaches.
Train 13173: Sealdah Toward Sabroom
Train 13173 Kanchanjunga Express leaves Sealdah at 06:50 means arrival in Sabroom comes by 20:45 the next day. Along the way, fifty stops break the journey.
Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri
Before dawn fades, industry lines the rails here in West Bengal. Around eight thirty-four, Barddhaman shows up quietly. By nine twenty-three comes Bolpur Shantiniketan as many step off toward Tagore’s learned streets. After that, Rampurhat; soon after, Pakur; then New Farakka where steel meets water on the Farakka Barrage. At half past one, Malda Town holds still for ten full minutes, a hub under Eastern Railway’s watch. Just ahead, Kishanganj hints at Bihar’s brief presence. West Bengal again by 17:55, NJP platform.
| Station | Arrival | Departure | Distance (km) |
| Sealdah (SDAH) | Starts | 06:50 | 0 |
| Dakshineswar (DAKE) | 07:06 | 07:08 | 13 |

| Kishanganj (KNE) | 16:08 | 16:10 | 480 |
| New Jalpaiguri (NJP) | 17:55 | 18:05 | 567 |
NJP sees heavy deboarding towards Darjeeling, Sikkim and anyone headed into the foothills.
New Jalpaiguri to Lumding
Ten minutes, then gone. What follows NJP is the Siliguri Corridor which is squeezed between Nepal and Bangladesh, maybe 20-odd km wide in places. Everything going into the Northeast passes through here. Night travel mostly from here. New Cooch Behar at 20:10. New Bongaigaon late, around 22:50. Guwahati at 02:40 when nobody’s awake to notice.
| Station | Arrival | Departure | Distance (km) |
| New Cooch Behar (NCB) | 20:10 | 20:15 | 693 |
| New Bongaigaon (NBQ) | 22:50 | 23:00 | 819 |
| Guwahati (GHY) | 02:40 | 02:50 | 975 |
| Lumding Jn (LMG) | 06:20 | 06:35 | 1,156 |
Lumding is a crew and engine change, and it takes a while. Electrification ends here. The electric locomotive that pulled the train all the way from Sealdah comes off. Twin diesel engines, WDP-4D or WDG-4D models from the Siliguri shed, take over. Banker engines also get attached at the rear for the ghat sections ahead. Fifteen minutes are scheduled for all of this.
Real-time position tracking via Train Live Status on RailMitra becomes especially useful from Lumding onward, where single-track delays tend to creep in.
Lumding to Sabroom
Dima Hasao district starts here. Tunnels cut through hills, high bridges cross deep valleys, speed drops considerably. New Haflong at 09:20. Badarpur at 12:10 and from here the line bends toward Tripura.
| Station | Arrival | Departure | Distance (km) |
| New Haflong (NHLG) | 09:20 | 09:25 | 1,254 |

| Udaipur Tripura (UDPU) | 18:30 | 18:32 | 1,589 |
| Sabroom (SBRM) | 20:45 | Ends | 1,659 |
The train almost empties at the Agartala junction, being the capital of Tripura. The train goes on to the terminus Sabroom Junction. This station is near the famous Feni River and the Chittagong Port is just 75 km away across the border. Sabroom was connected very late with the Indian Railways with train operation beginning as late as 2024.

Coach Classes Available
Indian Railways has been upgrading its trains to the latest LHB coaches. In 2025, Kanchenjunga Express was also upgraded with LLHB coaches for both of the train routes. The standard rake composition for this train is broadly around the following pattern:
| Class | Coaches |
| General Unreserved (GS/GN) | 4 |
| Sleeper Class (SL) | 9 to 10 |
| AC 3-Tier (3A) | 5 |
| AC 2-Tier (2A) | 1 |
| AC First Class (1A) | 1 (certain rakes only) |
| Parcel Van / SLR | 4 |
The train follows a set coach pattern. General coaches will be present at the starting as well as the end of the train. AC coaches and Sleeper coaches are sandwiched between these coaches, with AC coaches being placed ahead of the Sleeper ones.
Before committing to a class, check Train Seat Availability on RailMitra. It will provide available berth positions by class and date, all in one place.
Fare Breakdown
The pricing for the ticket on the Kanchanjunga Express follows the Mail/Express trains. There is no dynamic pricing here, except for Premium Tatkal tickets. Try to book your ticket 60 days before the date of departure, i.e., when the ARP (Advance Reservation Period) starts.
Sealdah to Agartala (13173)
| Class | Base Fare | Additional Charges | Total |
| Sleeper (SL) | ₹580 | ₹20 | ₹600 |
| AC 3-Tier (3A) | ₹1,507 | ₹118 | ₹1,625 |
| AC 2-Tier (2A) | ₹2,216 | ₹164 | ₹2,380 |
Across Different Routes
| Route | GN | SL | 3A | 2A |
| Sealdah to Agartala | ₹340 to ₹395 | ₹600 to ₹680 | ₹1,625 to ₹1,775 | ₹2,380 to ₹2,575 |
| Sealdah to Silchar | ₹315 to ₹340 | ₹555 to ₹625 | ₹1,505 to ₹1,565 | ₹2,200 to ₹2,260 |
| Sealdah to NJP | ₹160 | ₹350 | ₹950 | ₹1,400 |
The Tatkal Sleeper for Sealdah to Silchar would cost you around ₹810. This is ₹185 more than the regular Sleeper charge. So the Tatkal does add on the expenses, but the extra isn’t something unbearable. If you buy Tatkal tickets for AC classes as well the extra charge would get to be around ₹300 to ₹400, depending upon the distance of your journey.
Waitlist bookings can be tracked using PNR Status on RailMitra as the travel date approaches.
Food Situation on Board
What Happened in Early 2026
A West Asia supply crunch hit LPG availability on board. Railway Board put out a directive in March 2026 lead to induction stoves and microwaves in, gas burners largely out. Simple meals still get prepared on board: rice, dal, tea, basic curries. Not elaborate, but available through the journey.
E-Pantry Booking
Kanchanjunga Express was added to the E-Pantry scheme covering 25 long-distance trains. Meals get pre-booked at the ticketing stage. A Meal Verification Code arrives on the passenger’s phone. Pantry staff scan it on delivery. Digital payment throughout, so disputes over pricing or missing orders reduce considerably.
Stations Where Vendors Board
At Barddhaman, Malda Town and New Jalpaiguri, outside vendors come aboard and platform stalls are reachable during the halt. After Guwahati, food options thin out noticeably. Stocking up at Guwahati makes sense for anyone travelling all the way to Agartala or Sabroom.
Train food delivery on RailMitra lists e-catering vendors available at specific stations along this route.
Punctuality: Honest Assessment
Delays happen regularly on this train. Single-track sections in lower Assam and hill sections through Tripura are where time gets lost. Arriving one to two hours late at terminal stations is not unusual. Monsoon months push that further. Heavy rain makes road alternatives through the Northeast far less reliable though, which is part of why passengers keep using the Kanchanjunga Express regardless.
Position updates throughout the journey via Live Train Status on RailMitra prevent unnecessary platform waiting.
The Rangapani Collision of 2024
On June 17, 2024, a goods train hit the rear of 13173 at Rangapani. Ten dead. Forty-three injured. The Commissioner of Railway Safety found it was avoidable. Signal failure had been present in the Rangapani-Chattar Hat section since morning. Station staff at Rangapani issued incorrect paper authority to the freight train driver without specifying necessary speed restrictions. The loco pilot carried no walkie-talkie. Multiple points of failure compounding each other.
Faster KAVACH deployment across the Northeast corridor became a formal recommendation after this. KAVACH automatically applies brakes if a train overshoots a red signal or enters a section already occupied. KAVACH rollout on this corridor is still incomplete. Early 2026, still going.
Conclusion
Long ride. Basic food. Delays that happen more than the timetable suggests. Still, for a lot of people in Tripura and the Barak Valley, it’s just the train to Kolkata, there’s no real alternative. Check Train Seat Availability before committing to a class, follow Live Train Status once on board, and the Kanchanjunga Express will do what it has always done.
