Popular Trains Through Prayagraj Junction: List, Timings & Guide
You can ask any person in India about what is the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear the word “Prayagraj”. Some would mention the Sangam, some might introduce the Kumbh Mela, some may remember the old Allahabad name. But no one would mention Prayagraj Junction as something to remember. However, this is not fair on the part of this junction as it is one of the most important locations not in the city but all of the region.
Prayagraj Junction is the headquarter of the North Central Railways. The station code for this station is PRYJ. There are 10 platforms and 20 train tracks on this junction. Around 300 trains pass through this junction everyday. This number might even reach higher during the time of Kumbh mela when several special trains are launched by the railways.
An important query for the passengers is can we reach our destination from the Prayagraj junction or not? The short answer is, yes. This junction is well connected to all the regions of the country and almost every nook and corner of the country is connected with this station. Prayagraj Junction: The Station Itself
The boards read PRYJ now. Until 2020 it was Allahabad Junction. A-1 grade, North Central Railway zone with ten platforms and twenty tracks.
Two entry gates, and this is where first-timers go wrong. City Side is south-facing: old city, Chowk, Civil Court, autos and e-rickshaws outside the moment you step out. Civil Lines Side faces north toward High Court, Allahabad University, the administrative quarter and cabs are easier to find that way. Neither gate is the right gate in any universal sense. It depends on where you’re going. Pilgrims headed to Triveni Sangam will find City Side is noticeably faster. Civil Lines is for the cantonment belt, the university area, that side of town.
Elevators exist across platforms. Connecting bridges. Tactile paths for visually impaired passengers. For Mahakumbh 2025, 1,186 CCTV cameras were put up across PRYJ and satellite stations nearby, 116 of those running AI facial recognition. More camera infrastructure than several international airports in this country, if you want a comparison that lands.
Surprisingly, many overlook how much time these journeys lose along the way. Trains arriving from Delhi often carry delays before even nearing Prayagraj. Coming from Kolkata, they tend to fall behind schedule due to earlier stoppages. From Mumbai, similar patterns appear, small hiccups stack into longer waits. Half an hour late, the train finally arrives, forty minutes early arrival means standing around needlessly. A delay like this avoids itself if timing adjusts slightly beforehand.
Vande Bharat Trains at Prayagraj Junction
More Vande Bharat services stop here than at most junctions of this size in the North Central zone. Four in total, route planning worked out that way, or the city’s rail weight pulled them in, probably some of both.
Before sunrise, one might spot Train 22436 pulling out of Varanasi toward New Delhi. The rails stretch across 636 kilometers through flatlands and river valleys. Roughly six and a half hours pass before arrival in the capital city. Travelers going east board 22435 instead, departing later that morning. Midday light often greets those stepping off at Varanasi station. Airports become unnecessary when rail covers distance just as well. Direction defines timing – westbound leaves early; eastbound follows after noon.
That evening, another Vande Bharat leaves Delhi heading to the same place – its number will be 22415 or possibly 22416. Should booking a seat on 22435 become tricky, shifting focus toward 22415 might help. Though separate services, both reach identical endpoints by morning. Trains numbered differently may serve similar routes but run at separate hours.
Starting at 22550, the train linking Prayagraj to Gorakhpur rolls past Lucknow before reaching Ayodhya. Since this train connects two holy cities of the country, devotees often prefer this train as they won’t have to switch trains in between. Banaras–Agra Cantt Vande Bharat (20175/20176) stops at PRYJ on selected days. Doesn’t get much attention outside the stations it serves. If Agra or Mathura is the destination, this one is worth knowing.
Rajdhani, Tejas, Duronto and Humsafar
The premium options out of PRYJ are wider than most people expect from a city that isn’t a metro terminus.
12301/12302 Howrah Rajdhani runs daily. Around ten hours to Howrah. Been on this corridor long enough that regulars book it without thinking and look elsewhere only when it’s full.
12305/12306 is the Kolkata Rajdhani a separate train, different terminus within greater Kolkata. Both end in the same city, different stations. It matters to check which option you pick ahead of time, particularly when traveling beyond Kolkata where arrival location affects plans. Later problems often fade when distinctions become clear.
Fridays bring the Dibrugarh Rajdhani (12423/12424) moving along its path. Though weekly, it runs only once – strictly on that single day.. Miss it and the next premium northeast option is an entire week away. North East Express fills the gap on other days, not a Rajdhani, but daily.
12309/12310 Rajendra Nagar Tejas Rajdhani goes to Patna daily. Onboard service sits above the regular Rajdhani. Just how much that gap explains the cost varies by individual judgment.
Now and then, train 20817 or its counterpart 20818 rolls out, that is the Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani. On alternate days, depending on the week, service numbered 12453 or 12454 moves passengers; this one links to Ranchi. Frequency stays low, limited to several runs weekly. What sets apart this newer Bhubaneswar service is its pace, especially next to past rail options across Odisha. Because of this edge, seats fill up quickly after booking opens. Plan ahead or there won’t be anything left.
12293/12294 Prayagraj Duronto runs selected days to Mumbai LTT. No intermediate boarding stops. If you’re at Prayagraj, that’s an advantage. Starting halfway through isn’t possible. Getting on board after departure won’t work. Entry at any point along the path is blocked. Participation beginning later gets denied. Joining once things are underway? Not allowed.
Twice weekly, New Delhi Humsafar runs specifically on Tuesdays. Thursday through Saturday sees additional trips offered alongside that base schedule. All 3AC throughout. On certain days only, train 22438 ends at Anand Vihar terminal. When heading toward Ghaziabad, parts of eastern NCR, or Uttar Pradesh’s edge near Delhi, that stop becomes more convenient. Travelers bound for those areas find it nearer than alternatives. The service does not run every day, so timing matters.

Prayagraj Express (12417/12418) has a following that doesn’t need explaining. Twenty-three LHB coaches depart near midnight and reach Delhi before the day properly starts. Passengers who are aware about this train look to book this train first. Only when this train is completely booked do they tend to shift to some other train. Shiva Ganga Express and Mahabodhi Express also cover this route and in fact they do it daily. But these trains might take a little longer than the Prayagraj Express. If you want to begin your trip in the afternoon or the evening, choose Magadh Express or the Swantantrata Senani Express.

Howrah Rajdhani Express is the fastest eastbound train from Prayagraj Junction. This train is described in the section about Rajdhani, Tejas, Duronto and Humsafar. Among the Expresses, Poorva via Gaya is what most people reach for first on this corridor. Arriving at Howrah the following morning, Vibhuti leaves at 17:25, ideal for those preferring rest aboard instead of overnight lodging. While hotels offer beds, some travelers find train cabins more convenient during evening hours. This timing gives a chance to skip city stays altogether. For many, drifting off as the landscape rolls by feels simpler than checking into rooms. Sleep comes easier when movement lulls the mind away from urban noise.
Trains to Patna and Bihar
Shramjeevi Express (12391/12392) leaves at 07:20, Patna by 11:45. Runs daily. Most passengers wanting to reach Patna by lunchtime pick this one.
12395/12396 is the Ziyarat Express departs 09:15, Patna around 14:00, daily. Few visitors know this option under its official title, making it simpler to secure a spot when contrasted with busier lines attracting larger numbers.
Patliputra Express (12141/12142): This train leaves at 22:40. Overnight, Patna before morning. Exists for people who can’t travel during the day.
12487/12488 Seemanchal Express departs 16:35. Patna is not where it ends. Jogbani, near the Nepal border, is and that makes it the right train specifically for north Bihar and Seemanchal region passengers. Booking to Patna is possible; the train was just not built for that.
Four to five hours to Patna on most services. How the line is running on any given day varies.
Trains to Northeast India
Guwahati is 22 to 24 hours from Prayagraj. Dibrugarh adds another six. Day spills into another on these trips.
By 09:35, dawn fades as the train departs; known as number 12505 or 12506 based on route direction, it reaches Guwahati around midday the following afternoon. While its start feels crisp and dawn-lit, daylight returns before arrival. Runs every day. Standard daily northeast link from PRYJ, the default when Dibrugarh Rajdhani isn’t running.
Every day at 11:05, rain or shine, the Brahmaputra Mail rolls in – its arrival at a fixed point amid shifting timetables. Where most trains vanish on weekdays, this one holds steady, showing up like clockwork. Slower but when North East Express has no berths, that speed difference stops mattering. Wider coach space shows up more often aboard the Brahmaputra Mail – during a trip stretching two days, those spare seats matter most when time drags. Hours add up slower where comfort fits easier.
Leaving at 8:15 PM, train number 15483 or 15484 – known as the Mahananda Express – arrives in Guwahati around 10:00 PM the next day. This service marks the third daily rail link to the northeastern region from this station.

17 to 20 hours, depending on the train. Mahanagari and Kamayani are what most passengers end up on daily, both to CSMT, departure hours that work for most people. Mumbai Mail at 01:30 either fits your situation or it completely doesn’t. LTT terminus is the better drop-off if western suburbs, Thane, or Navi Mumbai is where you’re actually going.
Trains to Bengaluru, Chennai and South India
Fewer trains here than the northern and eastern corridors. They run reliably enough but start their journeys far above Prayagraj, which means delays get collected before these trains even cross into UP. Arriving early at PRYJ to catch these doesn’t necessarily help.
Each morning, southbound tracks welcome the Sanghamitra Express (12295/12296) as it leaves Darbhanga bound for Bengaluru, a journey lasting about 44 hours. First comes Nagpur, then Secunderabad – pace drops sharply, despite still being far from Uttar Pradesh’s edge. By the time it pulls into PRYJ, its original starting point matters little. Fridays see the Ganga Keveri Express begin its journey toward Chennai. Running under numbers 12669 and 12670, it departs just one day per week. While service operates regularly, frequency remains fixed – once every seven days.
LKO–YPR SF Express runs as number 22683 and also as 22684. This train operates toward Yesvantpur every Tuesday, besides Saturday. While one day sees it depart midweek, another places departure at week’s edge.
Early Thursday, the Himsagar Express begins its run southward to Kanyakumari. One of India’s longest train routes unfolds along this path. Travelers who value time on board often choose it deliberately. For them, the ride itself holds meaning – arrival matters less.
Trains to Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh
Three daily options, all routing through Nagpur. That adds hours but there is no shorter way geographically.
Each day brings the 12791/12792 Secunderabad Express at 08:30. Arriving later, the 17001/17002 Hyderabad Express follows its usual path by leaving at 16:55 every afternoon. When darkness begins to fall, travelers board the 11020 Konark Express, set to roll out at 20:25.
18 to 20 hours to Secunderabad. Which train is mostly a departure time preference.
Trains to Varanasi and Madhya Pradesh
Just 120 kilometers stand between here and Varanasi – reach it in less than two and a half hours, riding any train bound for that city. The Gorakhdham Express, numbered 15018, pulls out at seven in the morning. Earlier by fifteen minutes, at six forty-five, the Saket Express rolls through – numbered either 22183 or 22184 depending on direction. Another option shows up later: the Bagh Express, 13019, departing at ten thirty. Then comes the Pune-Banaras link, trains 22131 or 22132, leaving right at eleven. Each one runs every day without fail, getting you there ahead of midday heat.
Heading toward Madhya Pradesh, the Mahakoshal Express runs to Jabalpur while the Gondwana Express heads for Bhopal. Both halt at PRYJ, both daily. Not a corridor people talk about when discussing Prayagraj’s rail connections, but the trains run without trouble.
Trains to Lucknow, Gorakhpur and UP
Lucknow Mail (12230) at 01:10 reaching Lucknow by 04:55. Ala Hazrat Express (14235) at 15:30. Chauri Chaura Express (15003) at 11:15. Sangam Express (14163/14164) toward Meerut. Manwar Sangam Express (14231) for Basti. Shramik Express and Gorakhdham Express both stop at PRYJ for the Gorakhpur-bound crowd.
3 to 4 hours to Lucknow, about 5 to Gorakhpur. After booking, check PNR Status on RailMitra for your coach and berth number. PRYJ platforms are long and walking from one end to the other looking for your coach while the train is about to move is not a situation you want to be in.
MEMU, Passenger and Unreserved Trains
The long distance trains are always in the limelight, however in this we often forget the importance and contribution of short distance and local trains. The long distance trains are often taken for certain occasions, for example joining a meeting, taking admission into a new college or going for a wedding. The number of such trips is few. Short distance trains on the other hand are taken by people moving from one city to another for employment or agricultural purposes. Most of these passengers are daily travellers. Do you remember those guys who remember every trains name, route and timings? These people usually are these local daily travellers.
Starting off, the DDU to Subedarganj MEMU operates under numbers 63237 paired with 63238, alongside 64595 matched to 64596. Following that pattern, service 65112 connects Prayagraj Rambag to Banaras, while its counterpart is numbered 65114. Moving along, train 65132 links Rambag directly to Mau. Then again, the route from Chopan to Prayagraj carries the identifier 53345 going one way, then 53346 returning. Lastly, passengers traveling between Rambag and Ballia board number 55132.
Same-day trips link Prayagraj and Kanpur through Chitrakoot–Kanpur InterCity SF (22441/22442). People without confirmed seats often board JanSadharan Express (15560), which runs with unreserved coaches. From Jhansi toward Prayagraj, travel needs are met by Virangana Lakshmibai Express (11801/11802). All of these journeys are completed within a single day, thus providing a seamless railway connectivity across all of central Uttar Pradesh.
If you are going on a one way journey to nearby stations like Kanpur, Varanasi, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Mau or Balia it is better to take a MEMU train rather than wasting your time and energy on premium trains. Premium trains offer comfort and speed but the booking process is so difficult that it doesn’t provide flexibility to your travel plans. MEMU trains provide that freedom, although you might have to compromise on the speed and comfort. However, no reservation is needed, you can buy a ticket from the station and board these trains. These trains are unreserved coaches unlike the premium trains which need prior reservation booking.
Seasonal and Festival Special Trains
During the times of Mahakumbh this Prayagraj Junction was under an unprecedented inflow of devotees. Almost 3,134 special trains brought pilgrims to the largest congregation of humans on this planet. However, not all of these trains reached PRYJ. These trains were scattered across Naini Junction, Prayag Junction, Phaphamau Junction and Subedarganj Railway Station. Please check the boarding station on your ticket before making your travel plans. Do not think it is Prayagraj when your ticket says its Phaphamau Junction.

How to Order Food on Train at Prayagraj Junction
Allahabadi Tahari isn’t on the pantry cart. Chooda Matar, Aloo Kachori, Kali Gajar ka Halwa, none of it. Those are Prayagraj city foods and the train pantry system doesn’t carry them.
