10 Indian Railway Border Stations You Must Visit in Your Lifetime

Indian Railway border stations are railway establishments near India’s neighbouring countries that you must visit to understand the political map of the territory.  

 

Indian Railway’s vast network is spread over 67,956 kilometres that connect urban and remote areas of the country. It has 7,349 railway stations that serve 23 million travellers and transport 3 million tonnes of freight daily with the help of its 13,169 passengers and 8,479 freight trains. 

 

In the area, India is the 7th largest country in the world that shares its 15,106 kilometres land border with 7 countries, namely Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar. And interestingly to some of these countries, you can travel by train.

 

Here is the list of Indian railway stations that are near the nation’s border 

 

 

1.  Atari Shyam Singh Railway Station, ATT

 

Atari railway station is one of the most sightseeing border railway stations in the Amritsar District of Punjab. It is famous for military activities happening daily on the Atari-Wagah border. This border station is the exclusive Indian railway station that asks for a Pakistani visa to visit. The only train, Samjhauta Express,14001, also known as Agreement Express and Friendship train, runs twice a week from India’s Atari railway station to Pakistan’s Lahore. The train originates from Old Delhi Junction and does not stop in between till it reaches Atari.  

 

 

2.  Munabao Railway Station, MBF

 

Munabao is the last railway station in Western India, located in the Barmer District of Rajasthan. This border station looks great after the renovation. The design of this Border station is similar to Delhi IGI airport. The railway station connects India and Pakistan via Thar Link Express,14889, which originates once a week from Bhagat ki Kothi railway station of Jodhpur. After the origin, the train stops at Munabao station and leads towards Karachi Cantt, Pakistan. 

 

 

3.  Petrapole Railway Station, PTPL

 

Petrapole railway station is located near the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal near the Indo-Bangladesh border. It is an important transit point for importing and exporting goods between India and Bangladesh. Besides, international rail, Bandhan Express,13129 starts from Kolkata station, also known as Chitpur terminal, and halts at Petrapole station before moving to Khulna railway station, Bangladesh. One needs a valid passport and visa to book a ticket on the Bandhan express. 

 

 

4.  Gede Railway Station, GEDE

 

Gede is the last railway station near the Indo-Bangla border, located in Krishnaganj block, Nadia district of West Bengal. It serves as an important checkpoint Indian railway station for freight trains and Maitree Express. Maitree Express, 13109, also pronounced as Moitree Express, is the first friendship train that directly connects Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and India’s Metro city Kolkata. The express rests at Gede Station before moving to East Pakistan (Present, Bangladesh).  

 

 

5.  Haldibari Railway Station, HDB

 

Haldibari railway station, also known as Zero point, is vested in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. The station is 4.5 km away from the Bangladesh border, and it is a transit point. This border station connects the Chilhati railway station of Bangladesh, only 7 km from India’s border. Note that the Haldipur-Chilhati rail route was inaugurated in December 2020. Mitali Express, 13131, started on 26 March 2021, originates from New Jalpaiguri junction to reach Dhaka halts at HaldiBari railway station.  

 

 

6.  Singhabad Railway Station, SQB

 

Singhabad railway station is located in Srirampur, Malda district of West Bengal. Only one passenger train runs from the old Malda Station to this station. This Indian Railways Border station plays a crucial role in importing and exporting goods between these two territories. Singhabad is connected to the Rohanpur station in Bangladesh. Besides, freight trains from Bangladesh loaded with fertilisers also go to Nepal via Singhabad station. 

 

 

7.  Radhikapur Railway Station, RDP

 

Radhikapur railway station, a zero-point station, functions as an active transit station on the Indo-Bangla border. It is connected to the Biral Railway station of Bangladesh. This border railway station makes transporting goods to Bangladesh easy, especially from the Indian states of Bihar and Assam. Radhikapur railway station is located in Uttar Dinajpur district, West Bengal, and falls under the Katihar Division of the North Frontier Railway Zone. Moreover, the station serves as the Nepal transit tariff. 

 

 

8.  Jaynagar Railway Station, JYG

 

Jaynagar railway station is near the Indo-Nepal border, located in the Madhubani district of Bihar. It is at a 4 km distance from the neighbouring country, serving the Jainagar and surrounding areas. The station is linked to the Kurtha station of Janakpur, Nepal. One inter-India-Nepal border passenger train runs between these two railway stations. Indians and Nepalese don’t need visas or passports to board this international train. The rail service was re-inaugurated recently, on 2 April 2022, after the suspension of rail service in 2001.

 

 

9.  Raxaul Junction Railway Station, RXL

 

Raxaul Junction of East Champaran, Bihar, is another border railway station near the Nepal border. One can easily cross the border by taking a cab or jeep as both countries share an open border. This Junction railway station is linked to major railway lines like Delhi, Gorakhpur, Kolkata, Chakia, and Muzaffarpur. Raxaul acts as an important trade point between these two countries. Birgunj of Nepal is just 13 km, and Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is only 148 km away from Raxaul.

 

 

10.  Hasimara Railway Station, HSA

 

Hasimara railway station is vested in the lap of nature near India Bhutan border in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal. There is no direct train or rail route between Bhutan and India, but one can easily travel to this beautiful country. You can take an auto Rickshaw, shared jeep, or taxi to reach Jaigaon, Nepal, after coming to Hasimara railway station, which is well connected to New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri in Kolkata. However, you will need to visit the Immigration office of the Royal Government of Bhutan for a permit to travel to the Land of Thunderbolt.
