How to Check PNR Status on RailMitra? Know the Complete Process
Are you going on a train journey? You should keep in mind several essential points before you plan your train travel. Whenever you book a ticket online from the IRCTC or PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counter, you receive a unique 10-digit PNR (Passenger Name Record) number that contains journey details.
However, because of the festive rush, or if you planned your journey late and couldn’t get a confirmed reservation, the PNR number helps you track the current status of your ticket. With the PNR Number, you can also get the accurate PNR prediction of your ticket confirmation.
What is a PNR number?
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 10-digit number present on the ticket of the Indian Railways that contains journey details like journey date, time, train number & name, reservation status, etc. Whether you book a ticket online from IRCTC or PRS counters, you will get a unique PNR number that is valid till your journey completes.
You can find PNR number in your PRS ticket at the top left corner, and in online e-ticketing, you can find it in the top center.
It is a useful practice to check your waitlist ticket’s PNR status because the current status changes when other passengers cancel their tickets. RailMitra allows you to check the current waiting status of your ticket and get the accurate PNR prediction of your ticket confirmation by using the PNR status feature.

How Indian Railways generate unique PNR numbers?
The generation of PNR numbers is based on the current status and the number of days between the booking and the journey date. The system uses a process that renders different PNR numbers and makes each one unique.
The number consists of 10 digits, generated in two parts. The first three digits indicate the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) used to book the ticket, and the system randomly generates the rest seven digits to make this number unique.
The very first digit in every PNR number refers to the train’s zone (starting station).
For example, 1 is SCR (Secunderabad PRS), and 2 and 3 are for NR, NCR, NWR, or NER (New Delhi PRS) zones.
How can the PNR number help you in your journey?
PNR number is going to be very useful during your entire journey. Using PNR Number you can:
- Get Your Booking Confirmed: If you have your PNR number with you at the time of travel, you can give that along with a proof of identity to get your booking confirmed by the Ticket Checker (TC). It also comes into use when you forget to carry your tickets.
- Know the RAC/WL Status: Passengers can use this number to know their RAC (Reservation against Cancelation) or WL (Waitlisted) PNR status.
- Know Your Seat Number: PNR number gives your reserved seat number and coach number once the ticket is confirmed.
- Know All the Reservation Details: You can use the PNR number to know all the reservation details, including the fare amount and the arrival and departure time of your booked train.
- Get a Duplicate Ticket: PNR number is needed when issuing a duplicate ticket when the original is lost or damaged.
Why is no PNR number given for unreserved tickets?
PNR numbers are not issued to unreserved tickets. The reason for this is Indian Railway has not booked or reserved any seats or berths; in this scenario, the passenger can stand or sit anywhere in the designated carriage of the train.
PNR number is given to the tickets reserved for AC First Class, Second Class, Sleeper, etc. You can use RailMitra app and website to check PNR status of train tickets. You can also use this app to check train fare, train between stations, live train status, train schedules, order food in train, etc.
