How is a PNR number unique?
The PNR number is generated based on the current status and the number of days since the booking and the journey date. It is the process of generating PNR numbers that render each one unique.
The number consists of 10 digits, and each digit denotes something different. The first three digits indicate the PRS (Passenger Reservation System) used for booking the ticket and the system generates the next seven digits randomly to make this number unique.
The first digit in every PNR number refers to the train’s zone (starting station). For example, 1 is SCR (Secunderabad PRS), and 2 and 3 are for NR, NCR, NWR, or NER (New Delhi PRS) zones.
Now it should be clear how the PNR number is generated for trains on the railways. If you are travelling by train for the first time, you must know where to find the PNR number on your ticket.
How can the PNR number help you in your journey?
PNR number is going to be very useful during your entire journey.
- Get Your Booking Confirmed: If at the time of travel you have your PNR number with you, you can give that along with a proof of identity to get your booking confirmed by the Ticket Checker (TC). Therefore it is a useful thing for all those travellers who forgot to bring their tickets.
- Know the RAC/WL Status: Passengers can use this number to know their RAC (Reservation against Cancelation) or WL (Waitlisted) PNR status.
- Know Your Seat Number: PNR number gives your reserved seat number and coach number once the ticket is confirmed
- Know All the Reservation Details: You can use the PNR number to get to know all the reservation details, including the fare paid and the arrival and departure time of the train for which the ticket was booked.
- Get a Duplicate Ticket: PNR number is needed when issuing a duplicate ticket when the original is lost or damaged.
What does PNR status tell?
PNR status tells about the current reservation status of your waitlisted or RAC tickets. It also includes some other information like the number of confirmed seats, tickets on the waiting list (WL), fare paid by the passenger, the method of payment for the fare, and the date of booking.
Apart from that, the 10-digit PNR number stored in the Indian Railways database includes the following information – your name, date of birth, address, and telephone number. The details of your train journey are also stored on your PNR number, including the date and time of the journey, source/destination of the train, etc.
Why is no PNR number given for unreserved tickets?
PNR numbers are only issued for reserved tickets. The reason for this is very simple, because if your ticket is not reserved, in which case the Indian Railway has not booked or reserved any seats or berths, in this scenario the passenger can stand or sit anywhere in the designated carriage of the train.
