Make in India: First Hydrogen Train Hits 120 Km/h in Trial

Finally, India/s first hydrogen train completed its first trial and was seen on the Delhi route running at 120 km/h. It set the record as the first indigenous hydrogen rail under the Make in India initiative.

This milestone is a step towards evolution in Indian Railways, shifting towards non-toxic emissions and offering an environmentally friendly journey.  Now, it is set to release on the track after certain formalities.

The hydrogen-powered train trial was conducted on Friday between Delhi and Jind, ensuring smooth travel with better efficiency. Travelers will soon experience less noise and energy-efficient journeys.

Know the Indian Hydrogen Train

This train is an eco-friendly because it release water vapour and heat as emission. India has built its first-ever indigenous hydrogen-powered train, and its trial was successful with 120 km/h speed on Friday.

The train engine combines with hydrogen and oxygen onboard to generate electricity. The combustion releases the heat and water vapour as byproducts. So, railways saw it as a sustainable alternative for non-electrified routes.

However, this passengers train will run with higher speed to reduce the travel time. So, passengers can check train live running status to find real-time updates.

Hydrogen Train in India at Jind-Sonipat Route

In the upcoming future, this hydrogen powered train will run between Jind and Sonipat route to reduce the overall operational cost.

Since the route is non-electrified due to geographical challenges, it will reduce the operational cost and offer a better alternative for reducing fuel consumption.

To support the project, Indian Railways has dedicated production, storage, and refilling facilities for smooth operation.

The introduction of this train can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve eco-friendly travel.

Passengers can check the train schedule once it get the green flag from authorities shortly.

Train with Several Safety Systems

The hydrogen-powered train will be equipped with a different safety system.

It includes

  • Flame detection equipment
  • Engine Capacity
  • Vibration Level
  • Hydrogen leak detectors
  • Track  Suitability
  • Continuous monitoring technology

It can also find the potential issues with quick detection during operations.

How First Hydrogen Train in India Affect Passengers?

Among numerous trains, hydrogen trains are different offering various advantages to passengers.

  • Passengers will observe the low noise during train operations and experience better comfort during travel.
  • These trains will have a fast refueling system takes 15-20 minutes only, similar to diesel locomotives.

Certain disadvantages also come with this train.

  • The train will have a higher manufacturing cost, affecting the initial cost because it will require a special refilling system.
  • The train will lose significant energy during conversion and hydrogen production.
  • Specialized storage requirements with limited refiling networks create restrictions in routes.
